Hardeep Singh Puri Highlights Job Growth and Economic Progress Under Modi Government

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri praised the findings of a State Bank of India (SBI) report, stating that 12.5 crore jobs were created during the Modi government’s 10-year rule, compared to 2.9 crore jobs during the UPA’s tenure. Puri, who is the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, emphasized that India is advancing to become the world’s 3rd largest economy.

Speaking about the report, Puri said, “The Chief Economist of the State Bank of India (SBI) has brought out a report which indicates that in the last 10 years – the 10 years of the Modi Government (2014-24) – a total of 12.5 crore jobs were created.” He contrasted this with the previous 10 years under the Congress-led UPA Government, which saw 2.9 crore jobs created.

Puri highlighted that India has moved from being the 10th or 11th largest economy to the 5th largest in the world over the past decade. He noted significant advancements in housing, infrastructure, mobile phone exports, and urban transport systems, which have helped lift 250 million people out of multi-dimensional poverty.

He also mentioned that if India sustains a growth rate of 7.5-8% in the coming years, it will become a USD 5 trillion economy in the next 2-3 years, with higher growth in per capita income. “The economy is currently growing at anything between 7.5 per cent and 8 per cent plus. If you sustain this growth, you are moving from a 3.9 trillion dollar economy to a 5 trillion dollar economy in the next 2-3 years and then from there to 7.5 and 10 trillion dollar economy. Two things will happen: Per capita income will grow many times,” Puri stated.
