Harbhajan Singh Urges Action from Mamata Banerjee and Governor on Kolkata Doctor’s Tragic Case

New Delhi [India], August 18: Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh has called on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor C V Ananda Bose to take immediate and decisive action in the case of a junior doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.

In a heartfelt letter shared on his social media, Singh expressed deep anguish over the delay in justice for the victim and emphasized the need for swift action. He stated, “With deep anguish over the delay in justice to the Kolkata rape and murder victim, the incident which had shaken the conscience of all of us, I have penned a heartfelt plea to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Ms. Mamata Banerjee and Hon’ble Governor C V Ananda Bose urging them to act swiftly and decisively.”

Singh stressed that the safety and dignity of women are non-negotiable and that the perpetrators of this heinous crime must face exemplary punishment. Only then can we begin to restore faith in our system and ensure that such a tragedy never occurs again and we create a society where every woman feels safe and protected.”

Singh’s plea comes after Asha Devi, the mother of Nirbhaya, criticized the ongoing political blame game and urged focus on women’s safety and addressing shortcomings in the law. She described the incident as “the most unfortunate thing that has happened” and criticized governments for accusing each other and holding protests instead of focusing on the case and women’s safety.

The incident has sparked nationwide protests and strikes by the medical community, with Kolkata police imposing section 144 around the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to maintain law and order. On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, leading to nationwide strikes and protests by the medical community. On August 14, the protest site and the hospital campus at RG Kar were vandalized by a mob, prompting security personnel to disperse the crowd. To maintain law and order, Kolkata police have imposed section 144 around the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for seven days, effective from August 18.
