On a vibrant Tuesday in New Delhi, students of Apeejay School celebrated Hangeul Day, marking the introduction of the Korean alphabet in 1446. The event was graced by South Korea’s Ambassador to India, Chang Jae-bok, along with Mr. Hwang II Yong, Director of the Korean Cultural Centre, and Neha Berlia, Co-Family Business Owner and Core Board Member of Apeejay.

Significance of Hangeul Day

Hangeul Day, celebrated on October 9 in Korea, honors the creation of the Korean script by King Sejong in 1446. The Ambassador expressed his admiration for the students’ performances and their enthusiasm for Korean culture. He stated, “I was touched by the school’s warm welcome and amazed by the students’ enthusiasm for Hangeul and Korean culture.”

Strengthening India-Korea Relations

In his speech, Ambassador Chang Jae-bok highlighted the importance of cultural exchanges in strengthening the ties between India and Korea. He expressed hope for high-level exchanges between the two nations. India and South Korea established diplomatic relations in 1973, forming a “Strategic Partnership” in 2010, which was elevated to a “Special Strategic Partnership” in 2015 during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Seoul.

Celebrating 50 Years of Diplomatic Ties

In 2023, India and South Korea celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations. The two countries have collaborated in various fields, including a bilateral trade of USD 24.4 billion in 2023, and have engaged in defense and parliamentary exchanges. Cultural events like Hangeul Day aim to further strengthen the friendly relationship between the two nations.
