The Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has successfully completed its first cadaver kidney transplant. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is also the Health Minister, announced on Saturday that the kidneys from a brain-dead patient were donated by the family and transplanted to two other patients by an expert team of doctors at GMCH.

CM Sarma expressed his gratitude to the donor’s family and emphasized the importance of kidney donations from brain-dead patients, stating that it could save many lives. He also mentioned plans to conduct liver transplants in Guwahati.

Additionally, CM Sarma highlighted other medical achievements at GMCH, including successful IVF procedures and bone marrow transplants. He noted that GMCH doctors had transplanted embryos to 36 women, resulting in 8 pregnancies and one cesarean birth. The cost of IVF at GMCH ranges from Rs 75,000 to Rs 1 lakh. Furthermore, 28 bone marrow transplants have been performed at the hospital.

More than 53,000 patients have benefited from PM schemes at GMCH, according to CM Sarma, who reviewed the progress of the hospital’s work on Saturday.
