Guwahati Hosts Workshop on New Criminal Laws with Assam Police and Journalists

A workshop was held in Guwahati to help journalists understand new criminal laws set to be implemented from July 1, 2024. Organized by the Guwahati Press Information Bureau and Assam Police, the event aimed to equip journalists with insights into the new laws: Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.

Key Speakers and Highlights

Gyanendra Pratap Singh, DGP of Assam, was the chief guest. He emphasized the importance of the new laws and mentioned that around 200 police officers have already been trained in criminal forensic science, with more to follow.

Munna Prasad Gupta, ADGP, CID Assam, provided an in-depth analysis of the reforms, highlighting the focus on victims’ rights, especially for women and children, and the increased use of technology in the judicial system.

K Satish Nambudiripad, DG, NE Zone, delivered the welcome address, discussing the changes in the criminal justice system and the role of journalists in raising public awareness.

Interactive Sessions

The workshop included interactive sessions and a Q&A moderated by Jane Namchu, Additional Director General, PIB. Officials from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Assam Police, and representatives from various media houses attended the event.
