This important event aims to enhance global efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C through increased climate action and ambitious emissions reduction targets.

Purpose and Objectives

COP29 will focus on operationalizing the Loss and Damage Fund for vulnerable communities and finalizing elements of the Paris Agreement, such as Article 6 related to carbon market mechanisms. Enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and post-2025 climate finance goals will be high on the agenda.

The event is organized under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and will be presided over by Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources. Nearly 200 countries will participate, including India, which will advocate for equitable climate finance and highlight its leadership in renewable energy.

Gujarat’s delegation, led by Minister Kanubhai Desai, will showcase the state’s proactive role in promoting renewable energy and climate resilience. Other significant participants include the European Union, the United States, and key negotiating blocs like the G77 + China.

Daily themes at COP29 will address finance, energy transition, human capital, biodiversity, food security, and digitalization. Notable sessions such as the World Leaders Climate Action Summit will facilitate high-level discussions. The conference aims to establish a new global climate finance target and scale up adaptation measures.

COP29’s mission is to foster ambitious and cooperative solutions to the world’s climate crisis, with contributions from diverse stakeholders like Gujarat exemplifying sub-national leadership in the global climate effort.
