Government Plans to Tighten Rules on Foreign Investment in Tobacco Industry, Says Minister Piyush Goyal

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the Indian government is considering stricter rules for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the tobacco sector. Currently, FDI in tobacco manufacturing is not allowed. The new proposal aims to restrict FDI in tobacco franchises, trademarks, and branding.

The tobacco industry, which employs 36 million people, faces high taxes and regulatory pressures. The proposal is under review and may be sent to the Cabinet for approval.
