Gopal Shetty Withdraws Candidature for Boriwali Assembly Seat

Prioritizing Party Over Personal Ambitions

In Mumbai, Maharashtra, BJP leader Gopal Shetty announced his decision to withdraw his independent candidature from the Boriwali Assembly seat. Shetty emphasized that the party’s interest is more important than individual ambitions. He clarified that there were no significant disagreements with the party leadership, stating, “There were never any differences. There were things related to a particular issue. I think it has reached the right place.”

Shetty, a two-time Member of Parliament from Mumbai North, initially rebelled against the BJP’s decision to nominate Sanjay Upadhyay for the Boriwali seat. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed confidence in resolving any internal conflicts, stating, “They (rebels) are also our own people, it is our duty to make them understand.”

The BJP replaced sitting MLA Sunil Rane with Sanjay Upadhyay for the upcoming state assembly elections, scheduled for November 20, with vote counting on November 23. Shetty, who previously won the Mumbai North Lok Sabha seat in 2014 and 2019, was denied a ticket for the 2024 general elections, a seat now held by Union Minister Piyush Goyal.
