Gonpo Kyi’s Fight for Justice: The Struggle to Free Dorjee Tashi

In Washington DC, a Tibetan woman named Gonpo Kyi has been tirelessly advocating for her brother, Dorjee Tashi, who was imprisoned in 2010. Despite her efforts, a Chinese court recently ruled against her, making it harder to achieve justice for Dorjee. The court upheld the Public Security Bureau’s (PSB) decision to detain Gonpo, claiming her activism disrupted the Tibet Autonomous Region Higher People’s Court.

Gonpo, also known as Gontey, has been seeking justice since June 2022. Her brother, Dorjee, was sentenced to life in prison after being accused of “secessionist” activities following protests in Tibet in 2008. He is currently held in Drapchi Prison. Gonpo’s protests, including sit-ins and public demonstrations, have been met with detentions and beatings by the PSB.

On September 24, 2024, the Chengguan District Court in Lhasa dismissed Gonpo’s complaints against the PSB, which included claims of unlawful detention. Despite the challenges, Gonpo remains determined to fight for her brother’s retrial, highlighting the ongoing oppression faced by Tibetans under Chinese rule.

The International Campaign for Tibet has raised concerns about the Chinese administration’s oppressive actions against Gonpo. Her case underscores the broader struggle for human rights in Tibet, where people face severe restrictions and surveillance by the Communist Party.
