Doda (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], September 17: Ahead of the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Democratic Progressive Azad Party Chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad expressed concerns over the ten-year gap in elections, stating it has left the region behind in development.

Azad said, “I strongly oppose the fact that elections were held after ten years. Till now there should have been two elections, one in 2019 and one now. Three elections were held for the Parliament and the no elections here left the state far behind.”

He emphasized that rural areas like Doda, Ramban, and Kishtwar have been particularly neglected. Azad recalled his tenure as Chief Minister, highlighting the construction of schools and hospitals, and noted the current lack of teachers and doctors compared to his time in office.

Earlier, Azad advocated for independent candidates in the upcoming Assembly polls during a public rally in Anantnag. He stated, “Democracy means a system where everyone has the right to become Chief Minister. Some people from my party have left, but they are good people. I appeal that all independent candidates should be made successful.”

The 2024 Assembly elections will be the first local elections in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370. The elections will be held in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the counting of votes on October 8.
