German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck has highlighted India’s rapid economic growth as a significant opportunity for Germany to diversify its trade partnerships. During his visit to India for the 7th India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations, Habeck emphasized India’s potential as a valuable trading partner due to its expanding economy and strong democratic foundations.

Strengthening Trade Relations

Habeck stated that Germany is looking to reduce its reliance on China by seeking new trade partners, with India being a prime candidate. He noted, “India’s economy is growing fast. It’s good for Indian people. But it’s also a chance for Germany to step in.”

Collaborative Discussions

During the consultations, a large German delegation, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz, engaged in discussions with Indian officials. These talks focused on geopolitical issues and agreements in renewable energy and green hydrogen, fostering a better understanding and trust between the two nations.

Focus on Skilled Migration

Germany’s Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Hubertus Heil, highlighted the importance of skilled migration from India to Germany. He noted that the number of Indian workers in Germany has doubled in the last four years and stressed the need to expedite visa processes to attract more skilled labor.

Chancellor Scholz’s Visit

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is in India for a two-day state visit, marking his third visit since becoming Chancellor in 2021. He co-chaired the seventh round of India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
