On October 16, German Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, attended a special exhibition titled “Eckart Muthesius and Manik Bagh – Pioneering Modernism in India” in New Delhi. This exhibition, curated by Raffael Dedo Gadebusch, head of the Museum fur Asiatische Kunst in Berlin, highlights the rich history of Indo-German relations in art, design, and architecture.

Celebrating a Unique Collaboration

The exhibition marks the 120th birthday of German architect Eckart Muthesius and showcases his collaboration with Maharaja Yeshwant Rao Holkar II of Indore in the 1930s. Together, they created India’s first modernist palace, Manik Bagh, a symbol of international modernism.

Significance of Cultural Exchange

Ambassador Ackermann emphasized the importance of cultural exchange, stating, “The Manik Bagh exhibition tells the remarkable story of a young Maharaja and a gifted German architect, whose bold and progressive collaboration produced an extraordinary modernist palace.”

The exhibition features rare vintage photographs, watercolors, drawings, and design studies by Muthesius. It also marks the beginning of a collaboration between the Museum fur Asiatische Kunst in Berlin and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in New Delhi, aiming to deepen cultural ties between India and Germany.
