George Kapsch Excited About Kapsch Group’s Expansion in India
George Kapsch, Chairman and Global CEO of the Kapsch Group, believes now is the right time to expand the company’s business in India. He expressed his eagerness to enter the Indian market, highlighting the country’s rapid growth and modernization.
Kapsch Group, headquartered in Vienna, Austria, employs 4,000 people worldwide and operates in 50 countries. This is Kapsch’s first visit to India, and he emphasized India’s ability to progress without losing its cultural roots.
Kapsch TrafficCom, a part of the Kapsch Group, is a global expert in GNSS tolling technology. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is working on a hybrid, unbundled, and interoperable GNSS-based tolling solution. MoRTH Secretary Anurag Jain revealed that a Request for Proposal (RFP) is expected by the last quarter of FY 2024.
Kapsch Group is partnering with the Indian company Comvision to enter the Indian market. Kapsch noted that this partnership has great potential, combining Kapsch’s global experience in GNSS tolling with Comvision’s local market expertise.
Kapsch elaborated on the company’s two decades of experience in GNSS tolling, noting their innovation in developing more cost-effective solutions. He mentioned that GNSS adoption has been slow but is increasing, with India emerging as a front-runner in this technology outside of Europe.
In Europe, four countries currently use GNSS for tolling, and there is a European Electronic Toll System that covers the entire continent using GNSS. Kapsch explained that GNSS would help alleviate traffic problems in India by eliminating tollbooths and allowing free-flowing traffic, reducing congestion and preventing accidents around toll plazas.
To manage congestion, Kapsch suggested intelligently routing cars and controlling traffic signals adaptively. He also mentioned that introducing congestion charging for vehicles entering downtown areas could be a valuable solution.
