Trustworthy AI Framework Launched for Defence Operations
Introduction
In New Delhi, a significant step was taken towards integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into defence operations. The Evaluating Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (ETAI) Framework and Guidelines were launched by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan and Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO.
Importance of Trustworthy AI
General Anil Chauhan emphasized the urgent need for trustworthy AI in modern warfare, highlighting its role in recent global conflicts. He stressed the importance of ensuring AI systems are resilient to adversarial attacks and function as intended.
Framework Details
The ETAI Framework, developed by the Scientific Analysis Group, focuses on five key principles: Reliability & Robustness, Safety and Security, Transparency, Fairness, and Privacy. It provides a comprehensive set of criteria for evaluating AI’s trustworthiness.
Guidelines and Implementation
The accompanying ETAI Guidelines offer specific measures for AI development and evaluation. Dr. Samir V Kamat noted the necessity of reliability and robustness to prevent mission failures. Suma Varughese, Director General of Micro Electronic Devices, stated that the framework is applicable beyond the defence sector and assured DRDO’s support in its implementation.
