GE Aerospace’s LM2500 Engines to Power Indian Navy’s New Missile Vessels

GE Aerospace’s LM2500 engines have been selected to power the Indian Navy’s Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMV), which are being constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi, India. Six LM2500 marine gas turbine engine kits will be delivered for assembly and testing by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bangalore, India. These engines are known for their reliability and performance, making them a top choice for navies worldwide.

The NGMV is a new design for the Indian Navy, capable of reaching speeds up to 35 knots and equipped with advanced anti-surface weapons. The LM2500 engines will serve as the core of the NGMV’s propulsion system, providing superior power while maintaining stealth capabilities.

Amy Gowder, President and CEO of GE Aerospace Defense and Systems, expressed pride in continuing the collaboration with HAL to deliver this critical technology for India’s maritime defense. GE Aerospace and HAL have a longstanding partnership in marine and aerospace defense, dating back to 1986. HAL has previously assembled and tested LM2500 engines for the Indian Navy’s P17 and P17A frigates and the IAC-1 Vikrant aircraft carrier.

In 2023, GE Aerospace and HAL signed a memorandum of understanding to explore expanding their capabilities to include assembly, inspection, and testing of the LM500 marine gas turbine. To date, GE Aerospace has delivered 24 marine gas turbine kits to HAL, supporting the Make-In-India initiative.

Dr. D Sunil, Chairman and Managing Director of HAL, highlighted the strong partnership with GE Aerospace, which will be further strengthened with the NGMV program. The LM2500 engines are set to propel the Indian Navy into the future.
