Gautam Gambhir Becomes India’s New Cricket Coach
Emphasizes Playing All Formats
New Delhi, India – India’s newly appointed head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has shared his approach to selecting players. He believes that players who are ‘good enough’ should play in all three formats of the game: Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International (T20I).
Gambhir recently succeeded Rahul Dravid as the head coach, marking a new era in Indian cricket. Alongside this change, cricket stars Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja have announced their retirements from the T20I format.
Gambhir has a busy schedule ahead with the Indian team. He has made it clear that he prefers players who can perform across all formats. ‘If you’re good, you should be playing all three formats,’ Gambhir told Star Sports. He emphasized that injuries are part of a sportsman’s life and should not limit a player’s participation in different formats.
During his playing days, Gambhir was known for his aggressive style, which he has carried into his management roles with IPL teams like Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders. His message to players is to play with honesty and dedication. ‘Try and be as honest as you can with your profession. Results will follow,’ he said.
Gambhir played a key role in India’s victories in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2011. He also led Kolkata Knight Riders to IPL title wins in 2012 and 2014 and later mentored them to another title in 2024. His first assignment as head coach will be the Indian team’s tour of Sri Lanka, starting on July 26.
