Gauhati University Students and Teachers Protest for Justice in Kolkata Doctor’s Case
On August 17, the Post Graduate Students’ Union of Gauhati University, along with research students, teachers, and families, held a peace protest. They demanded justice and proper punishment for those guilty of the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
A large peace rally took place at the main entrance of Gauhati University, with over a thousand participants holding candles. The protestors called for stringent punishment through a fast-track court and urged the government to prevent such incidents in the future. They also requested that no political agendas be involved in the case.
During the protest, students sang peaceful songs at the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cemetery, calling for an end to rape in the country. One protestor criticized the compensation of Rs 10 lakh given by CM Mamata Banerjee, stating it would not bring justice to the victim’s family. He emphasized that the incident brought shame to West Bengal, not to the Chief Minister.
Earlier, junior doctors and medical students from AIIMS Mangalagiri also protested, demanding justice for the victim. A student expressed disappointment over the lack of progress in the case, stating that society had failed to address the issue adequately.
A faculty member participating in the protest questioned the safety of workplaces in India, even after 78 years of independence.
