Gagan Narang Praises India’s New Sports Governance Bill 2024
Olympic bronze medallist Gagan Narang has expressed his pride in the Indian government’s efforts to enhance sports governance. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports recently released the Draft National Sports Governance Bill, 2024, inviting public feedback. Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya highlighted the government’s vision to transform sports governance, aiming for India to become a developed nation by 2047.
Narang believes the Bill will be a milestone in India’s journey to becoming a sporting superpower. He praised the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in sports governance, aligning with international standards. The Bill proposes the formation of a Sports Regulatory Board of India to oversee National Sports Federations (NSFs) and ensure compliance with governance and ethical standards.
Athlete representation is a key feature, with 10% of voting members in major sports bodies being sportspersons of outstanding merit. The Bill also introduces a “Safe Sports Policy” to protect athletes from harassment, in line with the POSH Act of 2013. Additionally, Ethics Commissions and Dispute Resolution Commissions will be established to ensure fairness, and an Appellate Sports Tribunal will expedite dispute resolutions.
