G20 Labour and Employment Ministers Meet in Brazil
Key Discussions and Declarations
The G20 Labour and Employment Ministers’ meeting took place in Fortaleza, Brazil, where they approved the Labour and Employment Ministerial declaration. The meeting was held under the Presidency of Brazil and concluded after two days of discussions.
The Indian delegation was led by Minister of State for Labour & Employment Shobha Karandlaje. Brazil, India, and South Africa, the previous and next hosts of the G20, were part of the troika.
The meeting was preceded by the 5th Employment Working Group meeting, which negotiated the final text of the declaration. Key focus areas included the creation of quality jobs, promotion of decent work, gender equality, and the use of technology to improve quality of life.
The declaration emphasized the need for governments to develop active inclusion policies to foster sustainable and inclusive economic growth. It highlighted the importance of creating formal jobs, promoting decent work, and implementing effective labor market policies such as skills development and job matching.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Shobha Karandlaje met with Gilbert Houngbo, Director General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), and Japanese State Minister for Health, Labour and Welfare Miyazaki Masahisa. They discussed enhancing the mobility of semi-skilled and skilled workers from India to Japan.
