French Synagogue in La Grande-Motte Attacked: Police Officer Injured
Anti-terror authorities have started an investigation into a suspected arson attack on a synagogue in the southern French town of La Grande-Motte. The attack occurred on Saturday morning and resulted in the injury of a police officer.
French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal condemned the attack, calling it an ‘anti-Semitic act.’ He expressed his support for the Jewish community and praised the firefighters and police for their efforts. Attal stated, ‘We will not give up. In the face of anti-Semitism, in the face of violence, we will never let ourselves be intimidated.’
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin also condemned the attack and assured full support to the Jewish citizens and the municipality. He mentioned that all means are being mobilized to find the perpetrator.
The Jewish community in France, the largest in Europe, has been facing increased harassment and violence. Anti-Jewish incidents have nearly tripled in the first half of 2024 compared to 2023.
Francois-Xavier Lauch, the prefect of the Herault department where La Grande-Motte is located, denounced the incident and is heading to the site.
