Coach Deschamps Talks About Mbappe’s Performance

After France’s victory against Portugal in the EURO 2024 quarter-final, head coach Didier Deschamps shared insights on Kylian Mbappe’s performance. Mbappe, the French team captain, was substituted in the 106th minute due to fatigue. Despite having a 67% shot accuracy, he struggled to accelerate during the game.

Deschamps praised Mbappe for his honesty about his condition, stating, “He’s always very honest with me and the team, when he feels he doesn’t have the capacity to accelerate … He’s not at his top form … he felt very tired indeed.”

Mbappe was replaced by Bradley Barcola. In the tournament, Mbappe scored just one goal in four matches. The quarter-final match saw Portugal dominate with 60% ball possession, while France had 40%. The game ended in a 5-3 penalty shootout win for France after a goalless 120 minutes, with Portugal’s Joao Felix missing a crucial penalty.
