New Delhi, India – Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu recently spoke about the 1975 Emergency in India, describing it as a dark period that tainted the country’s democracy. He suggested that students should learn about this event in their textbooks to understand how it was imposed and the impact it had, including the arrest of thousands of people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also criticized the Congress Party for the Emergency, stating that it was a time when basic freedoms were subverted and the Constitution was trampled upon. He paid homage to those who resisted the Emergency and highlighted how the Congress government at the time disregarded democratic principles to stay in power, turning the nation into a jail and targeting dissenters.

Other BJP leaders, including JP Nadda, Rajnath Singh, and S Jaishankar, also criticized the Congress Party for its actions during the Emergency. The Emergency, imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from June 25, 1975, to 1977, is considered one of the most controversial periods in India’s history. During this time, there were political arrests, mass forced sterilizations, and beautification drives. Key opposition leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani, and Jay Prakash Narayan were jailed or detained.
