Former Mumbai Police Chief Param Bir Singh Alleges False Cases and Political Pressure
Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh has made serious allegations regarding his involvement in the Urban Land Ceiling (ULC) case. Singh claimed that he was falsely implicated under instructions from the then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders Sharad Pawar and Anil Deshmukh.
In an interview, Singh stated that there were attempts to implicate BJP leaders Devendra Fadnavis, now Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, and Eknath Shinde, now the state Chief Minister. He mentioned that the investigating officer, Sardar Patil, received direct instructions from senior officials to arrest him and other BJP leaders.
Singh also alleged that he faced pressure to register a case against BJP leader Pravin Darekar in the Mumbai Bank case, which he refused as the case had been closed after investigation. He accused leaders of the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government of exerting pressure in other cases as well.
Singh rejected allegations made by Anil Deshmukh, a former Maharashtra Home Minister, and expressed his willingness to undergo a narco test along with Deshmukh. Singh had earlier accused Deshmukh of corruption and running an extortion racket, leading to Deshmukh’s resignation in April 2021.
Singh stated that his complaint against Deshmukh was not politically motivated and was made more than three years ago. He mentioned that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted a preliminary inquiry, leading to Deshmukh’s arrest and charge-sheeting by the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Singh has stayed away from the media after approaching the court but came forward due to Deshmukh’s recent allegations. Deshmukh had claimed that the corruption charges against him were made on the instructions of Devendra Fadnavis to topple the government led by Uddhav Thackeray.
The Maharashtra government, led by Eknath Shinde, dropped all charges and revoked Singh’s suspension in May last year. Singh retired in June 2022.
