Former Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia Released Amid Nationwide Protests
Dhaka, Bangladesh – Khaleda Zia, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has expressed her concerns about the ongoing violence, vandalism, and looting of state resources during the anti-discrimination student protests. She shared her thoughts during a meeting with Maulana Mamunul Haque, the secretary general of Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis, at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
On August 6, Bangladesh President Shahabuddin Ahmed announced the release of Khaleda Zia by commuting her jail sentence under Article 49 of the Constitution. During the meeting, Zia recalled her good relationship with Maulana Mamunul Haque’s father, the late Shaikhul Hadis Azizul Haque.
Khaleda Zia emphasized that harming people’s lives and property is a serious issue and condemned the looting of state resources as unjust. Maulana Ataullah Amin, the Joint Secretary General of Khilafat Majlis, stated that the situation in Bangladesh is dire and that Khaleda Zia has asked for prayers for the people of the country.
On August 5, President Shahabuddin issued an order for Zia’s release, following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The president’s press team announced that a meeting led by Shahabuddin had unanimously decided to free Khaleda Zia and all those arrested during the student protests. The meeting included leaders from various opposition parties and military officials.
Khaleda Zia, 78, has been in poor health and confined to a hospital. In 2018, she was convicted of corruption and sentenced to 17 years in prison. The BNP claims the charges were politically motivated to keep her out of politics, a claim denied by Hasina’s administration.
