Forest Fire in Suleman Range Spreads to Sherani District, Pakistan

A large forest fire erupted in the pine forests of Dera Ismail Khan in the Suleman Range, Pakistan, on Tuesday night. By Wednesday, the fire had spread to the Sherani district of Balochistan. The local administration quickly dispatched firefighters and forest officials to the area to control the blaze. A senior official from Sherani district mentioned that efforts are ongoing with the help of Frontier Corps and levies, but strong winds are complicating the firefighting operations.

The fire has consumed a significant portion of the forest in Sherani district. Previous efforts by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government have not been successful. This incident is reminiscent of a 2022 fire that destroyed many pine trees in the same region, causing significant financial losses. Back then, the fire was eventually controlled with the help of an aerial firefighter aircraft from Iran.

According to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Pakistan’s forest cover is insufficient, making the country vulnerable to climate threats. Deforestation in Pakistan is driven by factors such as poverty, population growth, and inadequate policy measures. Although Pakistan contributes minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, it is among the top eight countries most at risk from climate change impacts. The forestry sector, vital for protecting against climate threats, has suffered greatly over the past two decades due to deforestation and forest degradation.
