Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s First Official Visit to Bhutan

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will pay an official visit to Bhutan from July 19 to 20, 2024. This will be his first visit abroad after taking over as Foreign Secretary. During the visit, he will meet with the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade Lyonpo DN Dhungyel, and other senior officials of the Royal Government of Bhutan. Misri and Bhutan’s Foreign Secretary Pema Choden will co-chair the India-Bhutan Development Cooperation Talks.

This visit continues the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between India and Bhutan and underscores the importance of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. Misri assumed the role of Foreign Secretary on July 15, succeeding Vinay Mohan Kwatra. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar praised Kwatra for his contributions to India’s foreign policy and national security.

Misri, born in Srinagar in 1964, has served as private secretary to three Indian Prime Ministers and held ambassadorial roles in China, Spain, and Myanmar. He has also worked in Indian diplomatic missions in Brussels, Tunis, Africa, and North America.
