Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri Discusses Indian Nationals in Russian Army and Upcoming BRICS Summit

On Monday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri addressed a media briefing in New Delhi, discussing efforts to secure the release of 20 Indian citizens involved with the Russian military. He confirmed that 85 Indians have already been discharged. This issue was raised at the highest levels, including by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Misri explained that the Indian embassy has been in contact with Russian officials to address the situation of Indians who were misled into joining the Russian army. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted that many Indians were recruited under false pretenses, believing they were accepting different jobs.

Prime Minister Modi and Jaishankar have personally discussed this matter with Russian leaders, including during Modi’s visit to Moscow in July 2024. The Russian government has assured an early discharge of the remaining Indian nationals.

Additionally, Misri announced that Prime Minister Modi will travel to Kazan for the 16th BRICS Summit, focusing on strengthening multilateralism for global development and security. This summit follows the first expansion of BRICS in Johannesburg last year.
