Floods in Prayagraj: Ganga and Yamuna Water Levels Decrease, Villagers Struggle with Aftermath

In Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, the water levels of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers have started to decrease gradually but are still present in the settlements. The floodwater has left behind dirt, swamps, and algae, causing significant issues for the villagers.

Water levels in Yamuna and Ganga river decreases in Prayagraj

A villager said, “There was a major flood here due to the heavy rains. The water is now reducing. The people have been in a lot of trouble because of the heavy rains this year.” Another villager added, “We have been facing a lot of issues. There is a lot of dirt that has accumulated here and it has been causing a lot of problems. We are not able to walk out of here, we have no food, and the cleaning is being done at a very slow rate.”

Earlier on Monday, continuous rain in the hilly areas caused a sudden increase in the water level of the rivers, leading to the Moradabad railway station underpass getting completely submerged and flooding nearby villages like Bhagatpur, Bhojpur, and Munda Pandey. Commuters faced issues as the underpass was inaccessible due to waterlogging.

Meanwhile, water entered the settlements in the lower areas of Prayagraj, forcing people to evacuate their homes. Baghada, Salori, and Rajapur were some of the worst affected areas. In Ayodhya, the water level of the Saryu river crossed the danger mark, causing major crop damage. Reports indicated that 60% of sugarcane and 70% of paddy crops were affected due to adverse weather conditions.
