Floods in Assam have caused significant damage, claiming the lives of 174 animals, including 10 rhinos, in Kaziranga National Park. The park’s Field Director, Sonali Ghosh, reported that the situation is improving, but many areas remain submerged.

Impact on Kaziranga National Park

According to Sonali Ghosh, 144 Hog Deer, 10 rhinos, 2 Swamp Deer, and 2 Sambar drowned in the floodwaters. Additionally, 2 Hog Deer died in vehicle accidents. The park authority and forest department have rescued 135 animals, including 2 rhinos and elephants, with 116 released after treatment and 6 still under care.

Historical data shows that floods have consistently affected the park, with varying numbers of animal casualties each year.

Situation in Nagaon District

In Nagaon district, nearly 79,000 people, including 20,612 children, are still affected by the deluge. The floodwaters have inundated 184 villages and submerged 18,231.8 hectares of crop area. This year’s flood has claimed 84 lives across the state.

Local resident Rita Sahani and her family have been living in a makeshift tent for 10 days after their home was flooded. She describes the ongoing challenges, including the inability to retrieve household items and the continuous rain.

Efforts are ongoing to rescue and treat affected animals and people.
