Floods in Assam: Brahmaputra River Rises, Thousands Affected
Heavy rains in Assam and nearby states have caused the Brahmaputra River to rise, affecting nearly 1.34 lakh people, including 33,760 children, across seven districts. The floods have submerged over 4,000 hectares of crops and 411 villages.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports that 67,030 people have been affected in Cachar district, 27,235 in Karimganj, 25,947 in Dhemaji, 9,868 in Tinsukia, and 3,857 in Dibrugarh. The floods have claimed 32 lives so far, and more than 11,000 people are taking shelter in 71 relief camps and distribution centers.
Cyclone Remal has intensified the situation, leading to widespread flooding in 14 districts and 309 villages, with Karimganj being the worst affected. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the first two days of July, predicting heavy to extremely heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in isolated places over Assam.
