Floods in Assam Affect Over 6.44 Lakh People and Claim 35 Lives
The flood situation in Assam has worsened, affecting more than 6.44 lakh people in 19 districts. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that 1275 villages are submerged, and 26199.18 hectares of crops are damaged. The floods have claimed 35 lives so far, with one person dying in Tinsukia district recently.
Districts Affected
The affected districts include Kamrup, Golaghat, Majuli, Lakhimpur, Karimganj, Cachar, Dhemaji, Morigaon, Udalguri, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Darrang, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, Biswanath, and Jorhat. Lakhimpur is the worst-hit district, affecting 143983 people, followed by Dhemaji with 101333 people affected.
Rivers Overflowing
Due to incessant rainfall, many rivers are overflowing. The Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat and Tezpur. Other rivers like Subansiri, Dikhou, Disang, Burhidihing, Jia-Bharali, Beki, and Kushiyara are also above danger levels.
Relief and Rescue Operations
The district administration has set up 136 relief camps and distribution centers, sheltering over 54,200 people. Rescue operations are being conducted by local authorities, the Indian Air Force, SDRF, NDRF, Paramilitary Forces, and Fire and Emergency Services teams.
Damage and Wildlife Impact
In the past 24 hours, floodwaters have damaged 44 roads, one bridge, and six embankments. In Kaziranga National Park, 98 out of 233 forest camps are underwater, and many wild animals have moved to higher grounds in Karbi Anglong hills.
