Floods in Assam: 46 Lives Lost, Thousands Affected

Floods in Assam have claimed 46 lives so far, with eight people drowning on Wednesday. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the recent deaths occurred in Sonitpur, Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Darrang, Golaghat, Biswanath, and Tinsukia districts. Three people are still missing.

The overall flood situation remains critical, affecting over 16.25 lakh people across 29 districts, including Goalpara, Nagaon, Nalbari, Kamrup, Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, and Lakhimpur. Dhubri is the worst-hit district, with 223,210 people affected.

Currently, 2800 villages are submerged, and 39451.51 hectares of crop area are underwater. Over 3.86 lakh people are taking shelter in 515 relief camps set up by the administration in 24 flood-hit districts. Additionally, 1,120,165 animals are affected by the floods.

Rescue teams from the NDRF, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Services, administration, Indian Army, and paramilitary forces are actively engaged in rescue operations, having rescued 8377 people in the last 24 hours. The floodwaters have damaged 100 roads, 14 bridges, and seven embankments, breaching four others.

The Brahmaputra River and its tributaries are flowing above the danger mark in several locations, including Neamatighat, Tezpur, Dhubri, Guwahati, and Goalpara. Other affected rivers include the Subansiri, Dikhou, Disang, Dhansiri (S), Kopili, Barak, Dhaleswari, Katakhal, and Kushiyara.
