First Durga Puja Celebration in Srinagar by Bengali Community
Durga Puja, a festival symbolizing the victory of good over evil, was celebrated for the first time in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Traditionally a major festival for Bengalis, it marks Goddess Durga’s triumph over the demon Mahishasura. This year, the Bengali Swarna Shilpi Brinda, a community of Bengali goldsmiths, organized the Sarbojanin Shree Durga Puja in Srinagar.
The event was significant not only for its cultural importance but also for showcasing the growing diversity and inclusivity in Srinagar. Locals, tourists, and the Bengali community came together to celebrate the five-day festival. A beautifully decorated pandal was set up, featuring an idol of Goddess Durga and traditional Bengali art. The atmosphere was filled with devotion as Sanskrit mantras were chanted and the rhythmic beats of the dhaak (traditional Bengali drums) echoed throughout the area.
The celebration was a historic moment for Srinagar, with participation from the DIG of Central Kashmir from Jammu and Kashmir Police, highlighting the event’s importance.
