A fire broke out on the spire of the medieval Notre Dame Cathedral in Rouen, France, on Thursday. The cathedral was evacuated, and emergency services quickly arrived at the scene.

The fire started on a tarp covering the spire, which was in place due to ongoing renovation work. The city’s mayor, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, stated that all public resources were mobilized to control the blaze. Fortunately, the fire was brought under control, and no injuries were reported.

Historical Significance

The Notre Dame Cathedral in Rouen, constructed in the 12th century, is one of France’s finest Gothic churches. The tarp that caught fire had inspired the famous French artist Claude Monet.

Comparisons to Paris Fire

This incident reminded many of the 2019 fire at the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, which caused significant damage. The Paris cathedral is set to reopen in December.
