Details of the Incident
On May 25, 2024, at 11:29 pm, a fire was reported at the hospital. The police and fire brigade arrived promptly and managed to rescue 12 infants. Unfortunately, 8 newborns could not be saved. The fire was found to have been caused by a short circuit, and burst oxygen cylinders were discovered at the scene.
Investigation Findings
The investigation revealed several safety violations at the hospital, including the absence of fire extinguishers and emergency exits. The hospital’s license had expired on March 31, 2024, and it was only authorized for 5 beds, but 12 newborns were admitted at the time of the incident. The doctors in charge were not qualified to provide neonatal care.
Legal Proceedings
The Delhi Police have charged Dr. Naveen Khichi and Dr. Akash under sections 304, 308, and 34 of the IPC, and Section 75 of the JJ Act. Both doctors were arrested shortly after the incident. The case has been transferred to the District Judge for further hearing on August 8, 2024.
