Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s Official Visit to Mexico and USA

Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, is set to embark on an official visit to Mexico and the USA starting October 16. This marks her first official visit to Mexico, from October 17 to 20, where she will lead a delegation from the Ministry of Finance. The visit highlights the growing economic and trade ties between India and Mexico.

Visit to Mexico

In Guadalajara, known as the ‘Silicon Valley’ of Mexico, Sitharaman will chair a Tech Leaders’ Roundtable with global technology leaders, including major Indian IT companies. The focus will be on enhancing tech cooperation and innovation. She will also visit the TCS headquarters, acknowledging its role in the Mexican IT sector. A bilateral meeting with Mexican Finance Minister Rogelio Ramirez de la O will discuss strengthening economic relations and exploring financial collaboration. Additionally, she will engage with Mexican Parliament members to foster cooperation and economic development.

In Mexico City, Sitharaman will deliver a keynote address at the India-Mexico Trade and Investment Summit, promoting India’s policy priorities and investment opportunities. She will also connect with the Indian community at a diaspora event.

Visit to the USA

The second leg of her visit, from October 20 to 26, will be in the USA. Sitharaman will attend the Annual Meetings of the IMF and World Bank, the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meetings, and the G7-Africa Ministerial Roundtable. In New York City and Washington D.C., she will participate in various events, including a Pension Funds Roundtable at the New York Stock Exchange and discussions at the Wharton School and Columbia University.

She will also engage in bilateral meetings with representatives from the UK, Switzerland, and Germany, and hold discussions with heads of major financial institutions like the World Bank and ADB. A key event will be the World Bank Group’s ‘From Idea to Implementation’ event, where she will share insights on financial strategies. Additionally, she will discuss the future of Bretton Woods Institutions at an event hosted by the Centre for Global Development.
