Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Clash Over NITI Aayog Meeting
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has denied allegations made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that her microphone was muted during a NITI Aayog meeting. Sitharaman stated that Banerjee spoke for her full allotted time and accused her of spreading falsehoods to please the INDIA bloc.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized NITI Aayog’s treatment of Banerjee, calling it unacceptable and accusing the advisory body of being biased. JD-U leader KC Tyagi questioned Banerjee’s attendance at the meeting, suggesting she might want to join the ruling NDA.
NITI Aayog CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam clarified that each Chief Minister was given a designated speaking time, which was displayed on screens at their tables. He confirmed that Banerjee’s request to speak before lunch was accommodated and that she spoke for her allotted time.
Banerjee, however, claimed she was allowed to speak for only five minutes while others spoke for longer. She accused the central government of political discrimination and walked out of the meeting, stating that she participated to strengthen cooperative federalism.
