Farooq Abdullah to Contest Jammu and Kashmir Elections Starting September 18

Farooq Abdullah, president of the National Conference (NC), announced on Friday that he will contest the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections. These elections are scheduled to take place in three phases starting from September 18.

Farooq Abdullah stated, “I will contest these elections, Omar Abdullah will not contest the elections. When the state status is granted then I will step down and Omar Abdullah will contest from that seat.”

The assembly elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases: the first phase on September 18, the second phase on September 25, and the third phase on October 1. The results will be announced on October 4.

Rajiv Kumar, addressing a press conference in the national capital, confirmed the election dates and phases. The dates to file nominations are August 27 for the first phase, September 5 for the second phase, and September 12 for the third phase.

Jammu and Kashmir has a total of 90 assembly constituencies, with 87.09 lakh total electors. This includes 44.46 lakh male voters, 42.62 lakh female voters, 169 transgender voters, 82,590 PwDs, 73,943 very senior citizens, 2,660 centenarians, 76,092 service electors, and 3.71 lakh first-time voters.

This will be the first election in Jammu and Kashmir since 2014, following the fall of the PDP-BJP coalition government in June 2018.
