Farooq Abdullah on Bangladesh Protests and Sheikh Hasina’s Resignation
In Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah commented on the ongoing situation in Bangladesh, calling it a ‘lesson for every dictator.’ He noted that the people of Bangladesh have run out of patience, leading to widespread protests that neither the Army nor the government could control.
Abdullah highlighted the economic and internal struggles in Bangladesh, mentioning that students initiated a movement that escalated into broader anti-government protests. He also pointed out the oppression faced by Muslims, suggesting that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would have been in danger if she had not left the country.
The political situation in Bangladesh remains tense following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation amid escalating protests. These demonstrations, initially focused on ending the quota system for government jobs, have grown into larger anti-government movements.
In response to the situation, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar chaired an all-party meeting in Delhi. The meeting included leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, JP Nadda, and others. Jaishankar briefed the leaders on the unrest in Bangladesh, and Rahul Gandhi expressed concerns about India’s foreign policy while supporting the government’s actions.
The meeting underscored the complexities of India’s foreign policy, with leaders discussing how to handle the situation in Bangladesh while protecting India’s interests. The government confirmed that Sheikh Hasina is currently in India, under the care of the National Security Advisor and his team.
Recent clashes in Dhaka have resulted in at least 135 deaths, including 14 police officers, and hundreds of injuries. Sheikh Hasina arrived in India on Monday evening, and it is uncertain whether she will stay in Delhi or travel to another location, possibly London.
