In Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah expressed his happiness as External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Islamabad, Pakistan, for the 23rd meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government. Abdullah hopes this visit will mark the beginning of a new chapter of peace between India and Pakistan.

Abdullah emphasized the importance of remembering former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s words that while friends can be changed, neighbors cannot. He expressed hope that trade between the two countries would improve, bypassing Dubai and going directly through the Wagah border. He also highlighted the impact of past hatred on Hindus in Pakistan and Muslims in India.

The 23rd SCO CHG meeting is set to begin in Islamabad with high security. Abdullah also mentioned the expectations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir from the National Conference party and urged the central government to restore statehood and empower the state government.

Omar Abdullah, a National Conference leader, is scheduled to take oath as the new chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir on October 16. Abdullah expressed hope that prominent leaders like Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin’s sister Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, CPI leader D Raja, and CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat will attend the swearing-in ceremony.
