False Stories on Social Media Stir Anti-India Feelings in Bangladesh
Dhaka, Bangladesh, August 7: Amid ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, false stories are being spread on social media to create anti-India sentiments. Various accounts on X (formerly Twitter) are sharing misleading information about India. One account, @IntelPk_, falsely claimed that Indian intelligence officers in Bangladesh Army uniforms were trying to flee. This post was shared by many other fake accounts.
Another account, @sabriaballand, falsely stated that Indian agents were committing crimes in Bangladesh while wearing Bangladeshi military and police uniforms. Additionally, @swwtyzm posted a picture asking if it showed Indian agents captured by the Bangladesh army.
Suvrokamal Dutta, an International Conservative Political Expert from India, called this malicious propaganda by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to create anti-India hatred in Bangladesh. He said, “The whole world knows about the nasty games played by Pakistan’s ISI and its army in toppling a legitimate, secular, and democratic government of Sheikh Hasina with active support from the BNP and the Jamaat in Bangladesh. So, this is nothing but another nasty ploy by Pakistan to defame India and raise anti-India sentiments in Bangladesh.”
D-Intent Data, a fact-checking group, exposed this fake narrative, clarifying that a video showing uniformed men at an airport was actually of Bangladesh’s Airport Armed Police Battalion (AAP), not the Indian army.
Priyajit Debsarkar, an independent geopolitical analyst from London, said the situation in Bangladesh is alarming and poses a threat not only to India but also to Southeast Asia and beyond. He added that misinformation is being used to tarnish the image of Indian security agencies as a form of revenge for events from 1971. Debsarkar believes that the people of Bangladesh will overcome this challenge and not let the country fall into the hands of fundamentalists.
