FAIMA Condemns Attack on Dr. Balaji in Chennai

The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has strongly condemned the violent attack on Dr. Balaji, an oncologist in Chennai. Dr. Balaji was stabbed seven times by a patient’s relative, highlighting the increasing violence faced by healthcare professionals.

Call for Action

FAIMA has demanded nationwide action to address this issue, calling for increased security measures and the enforcement of the Healthcare Professionals Protection Act. They urge state governments to prioritize the safety of healthcare providers by enforcing strict access controls and increasing security presence in hospitals.

Support from TNRDA and IMA

FAIMA extended its support to the Tamil Nadu Resident Doctors Association (TNRDA) in demanding immediate protections and accountability. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) also condemned the attack, calling for decisive action to protect healthcare workers.

Incident Details

The attack occurred at Chennai’s Kalaignar Centenary Hospital, where the accused, Vigneswaran, allegedly stabbed Dr. Balaji. Vigneswaran had been visiting the hospital for his mother’s chemotherapy, who had passed away from stage 4 ovarian cancer.
