Explosions Rock Brazil’s Supreme Court in Brasilia

In Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, explosions occurred near the Supreme Court, resulting in one fatality. The blasts happened after a court session on Wednesday, prompting an evacuation as smoke and fire were visible. The federal police have launched an investigation, deploying tactical units and bomb squads to the scene at Three Powers Plaza, a key government area.

According to a statement from Brazil’s Supreme Court, two loud explosions were heard, and all personnel were safely evacuated. The President of the Supreme Court, Luis Roberto Barroso, has been in communication with Brazil’s President, Lula da Silva, and other officials. The court buildings will be thoroughly inspected, and office hours have been suspended until noon.

Local reports suggest the explosions occurred near the Supreme Court and an annexe building, with witnesses noting smoke from a car before a second explosion. No motive or suspect has been identified yet. Celina Leao, vice-governor of the Federal District, mentioned that one explosion coincided with an unknown individual approaching the court, who was later reported dead.

The incident raises security concerns as it comes just days before the G20 conference in Rio de Janeiro.
