England Coach Gareth Southgate Talks About Fans’ Reactions After Draw Against Slovenia

Cologne, Germany – Following a goalless draw against Slovenia in the UEFA Euros 2024, England coach Gareth Southgate addressed the boos and negative reactions from English fans. Despite topping Group C, England has struggled with consistency and fluency, winning against Serbia and drawing against Denmark and Slovenia.

Southgate commented on the unusual environment created by fan reactions, saying, “I understand the narrative towards me. That is better for the team than it being towards them. But it is creating an unusual environment to operate in. I have not seen any other team qualify and receive a similar.”

He added, “So many things are starting to come together. We had a lot of issues coming into the tournament and today we looked more dangerous, we had a good impact from our substitutes, and we have got just now to convert our chances.”

Southgate praised young players Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer for their performance after being introduced as substitutes, noting their positive impact on the game. Despite their efforts, England could not convert their chances into goals.

England awaits their last 16 opponents, either the Netherlands or a third-placed Group E team. By topping Group C, they have avoided facing stronger teams like Germany, Spain, Portugal, and France in the knockout stages.
