The Patiala House Court in Delhi has extended the interim bail of Engineer Rashid, an independent Lok Sabha MP from Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir, until October 28, 2024. The extension was granted on medical grounds related to Rashid’s father. Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh directed Rashid to surrender by noon on October 28. The court also postponed the decision on his regular bail plea to the same date.

Rashid was previously granted interim bail on September 10 to campaign for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. The elections were held in three phases from September 18 to October 1, with results announced on October 8. The National Conference-Congress alliance won 48 seats, while the BJP secured 29 seats.

In 2005, Rashid was arrested for allegedly supporting militants but was later released after charges were dropped. In August 2019, he was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Despite being in jail, Rashid won the 2024 parliamentary elections, defeating former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
