Emmanuel Macron Asks Prime Minister Gabriel Attal to Stay After Election Results

French President Emmanuel Macron has requested Prime Minister Gabriel Attal to stay in his position following the recent parliamentary elections. Macron’s centrist alliance, Ensemble, came in second place, while the New Popular Front’s Left Wing coalition emerged as the largest group with 182 seats, though short of an absolute majority.

Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally secured third place with 143 seats. Former President Francois Hollande was elected to the French parliament for Correze, a region he previously represented.

European leaders, including Germany’s Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck and Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, expressed relief and support for the election results, highlighting the rejection of the far-right. Sanchez noted that both the United Kingdom and France have chosen progress and social advancement.

Jean-Luc Melenchon, leader of the New Popular Front coalition, stated that the Left is ready to govern. With three years left in his term, President Macron will navigate a divided parliament as challenges continue to arise both domestically and internationally.
