Eleven Suspected Militants Killed in Manipur Encounter with CRPF
In Jiribam, Manipur, eleven suspected militants were killed during an encounter with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Monday. A CRPF personnel was also critically injured in the incident. The northeastern state has been experiencing violence since May 3 of last year, following clashes during a rally by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) against the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category.
Efforts for Peace and Normalcy
Manipur’s Director General of Police, Rajiv Singh, emphasized the desire for peace and normalcy to return to the state. He acknowledged the challenging times but assured that efforts are being made with the cooperation of security agencies to resolve issues. Singh noted improvements over the past year and a half, with a reduction in violence, deaths, and injuries, although sporadic incidents of arson and firing continue.
Dialogue Among Communities
On October 15, elected members of the state’s Assembly from the Kuki-Zo-Hmar, Meitei, and Naga communities held discussions to address the current situation and urged the public to reject violence. This meeting, organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs, marked the first direct talks between these communities, demonstrating the Centre’s commitment to fostering dialogue and reconciliation.
