Elephant Calf Injured in Suspected Bomb Explosion at Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve

An elephant calf has been injured in a suspected bomb explosion at the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve in Gariaband, Chhattisgarh. The incident was reported by Varun Jain, the Deputy Director of the reserve.

Investigation and Response

Upon discovering scattered blood in the elephant roaming zone, the Anti-Poaching team traced the area and found an injured elephant calf, approximately 5-6 years old, with injuries on its legs and mouth. A part of a ‘potash bomb’ was found nearby, suggesting the calf was injured by it.

A team of doctors and a bomb squad from Raipur have been called to assist in the investigation. The forest department is using drone cameras to gather more information and has set a reward of Rs 10,000 for information about the poachers.

Use of Potash Bombs

Potash bombs are typically used by poachers to hunt animals like pigs and leopards. It is under investigation whether these bombs were intended for elephants. The forest department is seeking permission to treat the injured calf by making it unconscious for medical procedures.
