Election Commission Prepares for Jharkhand Assembly Elections with Key Meetings
A team from the Election Commission of India, led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, visited Ranchi, Jharkhand, to review preparations for the upcoming assembly elections. The delegation met with senior police officials, including IGs, DIGs, DEOs, and SPs, to discuss poll readiness. Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Dr. SS Sandhu also attended the meeting.
The team held discussions with the Jharkhand State Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and several Principal Secretaries. Meetings were also organized with the CEO, SPNO, and CAPF nodal officers. The Election Commission plans to meet with political parties, government officials, and enforcement agencies during their visit.
The elections for the 81-member Jharkhand legislative assembly are expected to take place on or before December 2024, as the current government’s term ends in January 2025. However, the Election Commission has not yet announced the election schedule.
On September 23, Union Minister and BJP National President JP Nadda addressed the Parivartan Sabha in Khunti, emphasizing the ‘parivartan yatra’ aims to protect tribal and women’s rights and take action against land grabbing. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav criticized Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, expressing disbelief at Soren’s return to office after serving time in prison.
In the 2020 Assembly election, the JMM won 30 seats, the BJP secured 25, and Congress took 16.
