Election Commission Postpones Haryana Human Rights Commission Appointments Until After Assembly Elections

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has decided to delay the selection of the Chairperson, Member (Judicial), and Member (Non-Judicial) of the Haryana State Human Rights Commission. This decision comes after a complaint from the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had earlier directed the state government to fill these vacant positions within three weeks after the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) was lifted following the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. Despite having sufficient time, the state government did not comply with this order.

A contempt petition was filed and listed on August 8, 2024, but was adjourned to November 12, 2024, at the request of the state’s counsel. The ECI noted that the state government would have enough time to fill these positions after the assembly elections.

The assembly elections in Haryana are scheduled for October 5, with the vote counting on October 8. The state government is expected to comply with the High Court’s order after the elections are completed on October 10.
